Well-built custom joinery is made to last for decades, and a little routine care keeps it looking as good as the day it was installed. None of it is difficult — this checklist covers the essentials by surface and by season.
Everyday cleaning
For most surfaces, a soft, damp microfibre cloth and a mild detergent is all you need. Wipe up spills promptly, dry after cleaning, and avoid abrasive scourers, harsh solvents and bleach, which can dull or mark finishes over time.
Care by surface
- Laminate & melamine: wipe with a damp cloth; for stubborn marks use a little warm soapy water, then dry.
- Timber & veneer: dust regularly and clean along the grain; keep it out of standing water and use a timber-safe cleaner occasionally.
- 2-pac / painted: clean gently with a soft cloth; avoid anything abrasive that could scratch the smooth surface.
- Stone & engineered benchtops: wipe daily, use a chopping board and trivet, and reseal natural stone as recommended.
Look after the hardware
Hinges and drawer runners are built for years of use but appreciate the occasional check. Keep runners free of crumbs and grit, tighten any hinge screws that have loosened, and wipe tracks clean. If a soft-close door or drawer starts to close too fast or too slow, the tension can usually be adjusted in seconds.
Manage moisture and heat
Moisture and heat are the main enemies of joinery. Use the rangehood and open a window when cooking, wipe down splashes in laundries and bathrooms, and never place hot pots directly on a benchtop or set an appliance that vents heat hard against cabinetry.
An annual once-over
- Check and tighten handles, hinges and runner screws.
- Reseal natural stone benchtops if needed.
- Inspect silicone and edge seals near sinks and wet areas.
- Touch up any small chips before they spread.
